About ACEO

Rooted in indigenous practices of mutual support and asset sharing in Amuria, Uganda.

Who We Are

Ajokon Community Empowerment Organization (ACEO) is a community-based organization rooted in indigenous practices of mutual support and asset sharing in Amuria, Uganda. We work to strengthen household financial security and community resilience through culturally grounded, asset-based, and community-led empowerment initiatives.

ACEO believes that lasting change begins with security, dignity, and collective responsibility — not short-term handouts.

What Ajokon Means

Ajokon is an Ateso (Iteso) cultural practice that refers to sharing or entrusting livestock to another household so that both families benefit over time.

Our Vision

A resilient and self-reliant community where households are financially secure, supported by strong social networks and sustainable livelihoods.

Our Mission

To strengthen household financial security and community resilience through asset-based empowerment, community savings mechanisms, and culturally grounded livelihood initiatives.

Our Focus

ACEO does not rely on single interventions. Instead, we focus on reducing household economic vulnerability and building resilience by enabling families to own productive assets, access community safety nets, and participate in collective growth.

Our Flagship Project

Ajokon Goat Empowerment Project (AGEP)

AGEP is ACEO's flagship livelihood initiative implemented under the Ajokon Plus Model. The project uses rotational livestock sharing, community savings, and local monitoring to help households build financial security over time.

A goat is treated not as instant income but as:

  • A productive asset
  • A living savings account
  • A source of nutrition
  • A buffer against financial shocks

Our Story

Ajokon was inspired by a long-standing community tradition in Amuria where families share livestock so that every household can one day own productive assets. ACEO was formed to strengthen this practice with structure, accountability, and community savings. Through initiatives like AGEP, we help households build financial security, not quick fixes — ensuring progress is shared, sustainable, and rooted in dignity.

Economic

Strengthening household financial security through asset ownership, livestock-based savings, and gradual income generation.

Social

Reinforcing community safety nets, mutual accountability, and collective support systems that reduce vulnerability during household shocks.

Environmental

Promoting responsible and sustainable livestock management practices that protect natural resources and ensure long-term productivity.

Our Alignment with UN Sustainable Development Goals

SDG 1 SDG 1 No Poverty
(through asset-based financial security and vulnerability reduction)
SDG 2 SDG 2 Zero Hunger

SDG 8 SDG 8 Decent Work & Economic Growth
(livelihoods and micro-enterprise development)

The Ajokon Plus Model

An enhanced version of the traditional Ajokon practice, strengthened with structure, accountability, and sustainability mechanisms.

How It Works

  1. Selected households receive a pair of goats under a formal agreement
  2. Beneficiaries receive training in livestock care and asset management
  3. Community monitors conduct routine and random check-ins
  4. After reproduction, the household retains one kid
  5. Parent goats are rotated to another beneficiary
  6. Extra kids contribute to a Community Goat Bank
  7. Households participate in a community savings mechanism for emergencies

This model ensures growth, accountability, and shared benefit.

Emergency Safety Net: Ajokon Community Savings Circle (ACSC)

All AGEP beneficiaries participate in a community-managed savings circle, which functions as an emergency safety net. Each household contributes a small, agreed-upon amount to the fund. In times of urgent need — such as illness or school expenses — beneficiaries can access short-term, recoverable support. This prevents distress selling of goats, safeguards core assets, and reinforces financial discipline and collective responsibility.

1

Beneficiary families receive two goats complemented by comprehensive training on livestock care.

2

Upon reproduction, families retain the offspring while transferring the parent goats to another beneficiary family.

3

The Goat Bank serves as a communal insurance mechanism for goat replacements.

Implementation
